The border-day plan

To Laos

Quy Nhon – Bo Y

About 6 hours each way, back the same evening.

  1. Pickup in Quy Nhon

Your private car collects you from your home or hotel. On the way, our team explains each step of the border procedure.

  2. Arrive at Bo Y

You drive Highway 19 to Pleiku, then north via Kon Tum (about 290 km). Queue for the Vietnam exit procedure.

  3. Exit Vietnam

As soon as you have the exit stamp, send us a clear photo of it. That lets our team check your new Vietnam e-visa straight away.

  4. Enter Laos at Phou Keua

Show your passport: you either enter visa-free (for example Russian, Korean, Japanese and ASEAN passports) or with the Lao visa we arranged before the trip. There is no visa on arrival here. You wait briefly on the Lao side while we follow your Vietnam e-visa.

  5. Re-enter Vietnam at Bo Y

Show your new Vietnam e-visa, which must name Bo Y as the entry gate. Before leaving, send us a photo of your new entry stamp so we can check it.

  6. Drive back

The car leaves the border for Quy Nhon. If your e-visa or the queue takes longer, we agree the plan with you on the day.

  7. Back in Quy Nhon

The car drives you back and drops you at your home or hotel.

Times are typical, not guaranteed. Mountain roads, border queues and e-visa approval times vary.

Read this before choosing Laos

The Lao side of this crossing, Phou Keua in Attapeu province, works differently from busier Lao borders.

No visa on arrival, no Lao e-visa. Phou Keua stopped issuing Lao visas on arrival, and it is not on the official list of ports that accept the Lao e-visa (laoevisa.gov.la). If your passport is not visa-exempt for Laos, you need a Lao visa before the trip. We can arrange it for you.

1. Is your passport visa-exempt for Laos?

Fifteen nationalities can enter Laos without a visa on an ordinary passport, including Russia, South Korea, Mongolia, all ASEAN countries, Japan, Switzerland and Luxembourg. For these travellers Bo Y is a straightforward run. See the full Laos exemption list.

2. Not exempt? You have two options

  • Let us arrange your Lao visa before the trip: VND 1,400,000 per traveller. Contact us as early as you can so there is time to get it ready.
  • Take the Le Thanh route to Cambodia instead, where most nationalities can buy a visa on arrival.

3. How will you come back into Vietnam?

You need a new Vietnam e-visa that names Bo Y as the entry gate, or a nationality that is visa-exempt for Vietnam. Bo Y is on the official e-visa gate list published on evisa.gov.vn. We can apply for the e-visa for you as part of the trip.
